Knesset Votes $10,000,000 Interim Budget; Left and Center Attack Government’s Proposals

The Knesset last night voted an interim budget of 3,500,000 pounds (approximately $10,500,000) for the next month’s operations of the government. The amount is one-twelfth of the total sum requested by the government for the 1949-50 fiscal year.

Meanwhile, the debate on the budget, scheduled to last 30 hours this week And next, continued with attacks by Mapan leader Aaron Zisling and General Zionist Dr. Fritz Bernstein on the government’s proposals. The left-wing leader charged that the government “lacks a complete plan for the absorption of the immigrants,” and demanded nationalization of the land. Dr. Bernstein’s main point was that the government’s economic policy is hindering the investment of Jewish capital.
