A public farewell meeting attended by more than 1,000 leading British Jews was held here last night in honor of Prof. Selig Brodetsky, newly-elected president of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem who will leave for Israel next week to take up his new duties. Among the distinguished guests who attended the meeting were Israeli Minister to Britain, Dr. Mordecai Eliash, Barnett Janner, M.P., who presided, and Prof. Norman Bentwich.

Prof. Brodetsky emphasized the need for making the Hebrew University worthy of Jerusalem. “The University must remain absolutely independent of any political in fluence from the government or any other body,” he declared. He stated that although he agreed with the recent assertion by Israeli Minister of Religion Rabbi Judah Maimon that religion is the basis of the Jewish spirit, he did not hold with Minister Maimon’s view that the University cannot play the role of a “spiritual center.”
