Jewish communities in Western Europe are speedily recovering from the effects of persecution and war, as a result of aid which they receive from American Jewry through the United Jewish Appeal, Dr. Jorah B. Wise reported today upon his return from abroad.
“Unless some unforeseen emergencies arise, the rehabilitation needs in that part of Europe that must be met by the Joint Distribution Committee will be substantially lower in 1950,” he declared. Dr. Wise conferred with Jewish leaders in France, Italy and other countries curing his visit to Europe. He emphasized the critical situation in Marseilles and other ports which are being used as points of embarkation for refugees from DP centers in Europe and North Africa.
Discussing the general situation in Western Europe, Rabbi Wise observed that there is widespread fear, particularly in France, of a revival of German power as a threat to peace. He also remarked that there was strong evidence that the “Nazi ideology is still prevalent in Germany.”
