The recent opening of an annex housing unit has made the Israel legation in the Soviet capital a self contained colony in which all of the mission’s officials reside. Previously, some of the legation’s members were obliged to live at the Metropole Hotel and to travel back and forth between the legation’s offices and their living quarters. One room at the Metropole is still being held for emergency use.
The new annex, a remodelled house with a large garage for mission vehicles, is located across the garden from the main legation building. It will provide two-room apartments with kitchen and bath for four of the legation’s officers and their wives and families. Interior furnishings were imported from Finland.
The mission’s head, Minister Mordecai Namir, lives at the main legation building, a remodelled mansion, which houses the mission offices, reception rooms and dining hall, as well as technical personnel. The legation’s buildings are rented from a Soviet agency which services Moscow’s diplomatic corps.
