Cardinal Gilroy, Catholic Archbishop of Sydney and Primate of Australia, has denied that there has been an increase in anti-Semitic feeling among the Catholic masses. In an interview in the current issue of the Sydney Jewish News, the Cardinal added: “I personally do not see why there should not be the friendliest of relations and good will on both sides.”
Turning to the Jerusalem situation, the Cardinal declared that a “brotherly solution” can and will be found to the problem of that city. Though formally endorsing the Vatican’s viewpoint on the internationalization of Jerusalem, the Cardinal attributed much of the dispute and ill will over the Jerusalem situation to what he called the “fear of the unknown.” He said that various Catholic writers who have touched on the subject of Jerusalem are merely expressing their personal views.
