The Argentine Government today extended its deadline for persons who entered this country illegally before July 8 of this year to legalize their status. The new decree extends the deadline form October 1, 1949, to March 31, 1950.
The extension decree also modified the original order which demanded that persons desiring to become legal residents of Argentina prove by documentation that they arrived before July 8. The latest instructions permit an applicant for legalization to prove his presence in the country by the testimony of two witnesses.
The extension order was issued, government officials explained, because there were so many persons taking advantage of the decree that it would not have been possible to process all their applications by the earlier deadline. Many thousands of Jews are among the illegal immigrants who have accepted the government’s offer.
