Dr. Alexander Shafran, Chief Rabbi of Geneva, today left for Paris after completing his mission on behalf of the Jewish Documentation Center in France which is engaged in publishing documents concerning the anti-Jewish activities of the Nazis in France and other countries occupied by the German Army during the War.
The Center is now in possession of more than 100,000 documents, a considerable portion of which are originals from Gestapo archives seized in France, as well as from the archives of the General Staff of the German Military Command in France. The Center is also in possession of documents relating to the treatment of Jews by the Vichy regime, including the archives of the Commissariat for Jewish Affairs, established by the Petain Government.
Dr. Shafran, who spent three months in the United States seeking funds for the activities of the Center, conferred with representatives of the Joint Distribution Committee, American Jewish Committee, B’nai B’rith, Jewish Labor Committee and the Labor Zionist Organization of America. An American group to continue the efforts of Dr. Shafran in raising funds for the Jewish Documentation Center has been formed here under the chairmanship of Boris Bregel.
