None of the major French newspapers have expressed approval of France’s action in voting for the U.N. resolution to internationalize Jerusalem under the administration of the U.N. Trusteeship Council.
Newspapers of all shades of political opinion are in agreement that the only basic result of the U.N. action has been to bring Israel and Transjordan into agreement–in opposition to the U.N. plan. Most commentators believe that the U.N.’s prestige will suffer when it proves incapable of imposing its solution on the city.
French Zionist circles do not show too much concern over the vote. The general opinion in these circles is that an “unjust and impracticable” decision may, in the long run, prove less harmful to Israel then one which would have offered a few concessions to Israel and which would have been implemented.
