The Hong Kong Jewish community, which has been in existence for half a century, has this year for the first time been approached by the Keren Hayesod to conduct a fund-raising campaign in behalf of Israel institutions. A committee to conduct the drive has already been organized, despite the objections of a number of British Jews who still avoid all matters concerning Israel.
The Hong Kong Jewish Women’s Association, founded to support the Youth Aliyah movement, recently celebrated its first anniversary. During the year the group collected $13,000. The local Jewish community is unique in that it has almost no local welfare problem, since only four persons are currently being assisted by the community.
A mild interest has been demonstrated by some members of the community in investment possibilities in Israel. Also, several young people recently went to Israel on immigrant transports sponsored by the International Refugee Organization and the Joint Distribution Committee.
