Federal Security Administrator Urges Aid to Israel; Ridicules “dual Loyalty” Talk

Oscar Ewing, Federal Security Administrator, warned today that Israel’s economy must be reinforced by aid from America if the new republic is to survive as a “stronghold of democracy in the western sense” in the Middle East. Speaking at the concluding session of the mid-winter conference of Hadassah, Mr. Ewing scored as “silly” charges of dual loyalty hurled at “American citizens who take an earnest interest in the future of Israel.” He said it is “part of American nature to help other people.”

Discussing the huge economic, social and political problems–housing, immigration, relations with the Arab states and vocational training–which faced Israel, Mr. Ewing said he shared the confidence of its people who are “supremely sure” they can solve their problems. “I am proud of the part played by the American Government in ultimately making it possible for Israel to be born,” he said. “I am equally proud of the voluntary role played by the American citizens, including especially the members of Hadassah in helping bring success to Israel.”
