Board of Jewish Deputies in Britain Calls for Checking Anti-semitism in Germany

An appeal to the British Government and to other occupation powers in Germany to check the anti-Semitic forces there in their attempts to revive their activities was voiced here last night by Dr. Abraham Cohen, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews.

Addressing a meeting of the Beard, Dr. Cohen cited the acquittal last week by a German court of Wolfgang Hedler–the ex-Nazi deputy who justified publicly the principle of making Germany “Judenrein”–as “a danger signal” which the democratic world must not ignore.

Another report to the meeting revealed that a conference would be held either the end of this month or early in March by Jewish organizations in England and representatives of Jewish communities in the British zone of Germany over heirless Jewish property. The parley will attempt to establish a trust corporation, under British law, to take over responsibility for such property. The conclusions of the conference will be presented to the British Foreign Office for definitive action.

The Board was also warned to prepare for a new flare-up in the anti-Schechita campaign as soon as the national elections are over. The meeting also took note of the recent decision of the Commission on the Status of Jewish War Orphans to appeal to the United Nations over the Dutch Jewish community’s unsuccessful campaign to recover Jewish children from non-Jewish foster homes.
