Hearings were begun today by a special government committee on the circumstances surrounding the assassination of Count Folke Bernadotte, U.N. Palestine mediator, which took place on Sept. 17, 1948, in Jerusalem.
The special committee set up by the Israel Government today questioned military and civilian witnesses. The committee is also studying documents and police reports concerning the circumstances under which the late U.N. mediator was assassinated by extremists who made good their escape.
The special committee is expected to complete its work soon, in order to enable the Israel Government to make a formal reply to Sweden where official charges were voiced that Israel authorities have not been sufficiently active in finding the assassins. The Israel Government insists that all steps possible have been taken to discover the assassins and that the case has not yet been closed.
