The Israel memorandum on safeguarding the Holy Places in Jerusalem was today welcomed by a spokesman for the French Foreign Ministry. He declared that the proposal “shows great comprehension of the interests involved and seems to constitute progress toward the United Nations view” on a solution.

Pointing out that France’s interest in the Jerusalem issue is to obtain guarantees that the integrity and safety of the Holy Places will be maintained and that any solution which is adopted meets with the approval of all parties concerned, the spokesman added: “We do not yet know the Arab reaction (to the Israel proposal) therefore we cannot make a definite statement” on it.
