Eddie Cantor, the noted American comedian and active member of the United Jewish Appeal who is now visiting Israel, today told a press conference that “it is fantastic to suggest that immigration to the Jewish state should be curtailed even for one single day.”

He made this statement following a visit to the ship Galila to greet over 600 Jewish immigrants who arrived from an Italian port. The group included 250 children who started their trek in Poland. “If the rescue of these people is postponed even for a short while, it may not be possible to rescue them at all,” he said. “Israel is the greatest life-saving nation in the world today,” he added.
