On his departure for Israel today, Henry Morgenthau, Jr., general chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, called for increased American aid for the “only democracy in the Middle East.” In the present world crisis, he said, “we must strengthen the democratic forces throughout the world.” Israel represents “a very strong and devoted friend of freedom,” he added.

Mr. Morgenthau is on his way to Israel to confer with Premier Ben Gurion and other members of the government regarding the economic and financial needs of the country. He will also visit new settlements and housing developments established to absorb the large numbers of immigrants that are being brought into Israel with the aid of the U.J.A.
