The Jewish War Veterans, opening its 55th annual national encampment here tonight, heard praise for the contributions made by the state of Israel to the free way of life by its support of United Nations decisions to repel aggression in Korea.
Jackson J. Holtz of Boston, retiring J.W.V. national commander, noted that “while the American Jewish community will, as always in the past, meet the full share of its responsibilities to our own country, additional efforts will have to be made to help meet the needs of Israel.” In this, he said, American Jewry will be “strengthening a sister democracy which is as much as target of Communist hatred as the United States.”
Mossages from President Truman and ranking U.S. military leaders praised Jewish contributions to America’s security. Mr. Truman called for “sacrifices by everyone to curb Communist aggression.” General of the Army Cmar N. Bradloy lauded the “accomplishments of the Jewish War Veterans” and spoke of the need for “Americans to remain firm in support of the fundamentals of our free system.” The encampment sessions began after sundown tonight at the conclusion of the Simchas Torah observance.
