Sen. Herbert H. Lehman, in a telegram to President Truman at San Francisco where he is expected today, urged him to issue an executive order banming discrimination in defense jobs.
The wire, sent yesterday, urged the President to emulate the example of the late President Roosevelt who in 1941 issued an order banning discrimination in all defense industries and factories and establishing the wartime Fair Employment Practices Commission. President Truman has often expressed himself in favor of a permanent F.E.P.C. Sen. Lehman pointed out to the President that the executive order would not be a substitute for a permanent F.E.P.C. but is necessary in the current world situation while we continue to work for this legislation.”
