Emanuel Levy, a leading member of the Democrat Party in the city of Milas, in western Turkey, has been appointed a member of the Milas municipal council, the first Jew to hold that post.

Only two other Jews in Turkey hold the post of municipal councillor. One is on the Istanbul council and the other serves in Izmir. The Jewish community of Milas numbers 150 persons. The total was about 300 two years ago when the migration of Turkish Jews to Israel began.
