Israel’s Independence Day was celebrated here today by the 200 men and officers of the two Israeli warships–the Misgav and the Haganah-with a full dress parade and memorial services at U.S. Navy pier 26.

Col. Vivian Herzog, Naval Attache of the Israel Embassy, reviewed the formation and presented medals to 24 officers and sailors. The medals were awarded upon instructions from the military headquarters at Haifa to “men who had seen active service in Israel’s War of Independence.” In presenting the decorations, Col. Herzog also paid tribute to those of Israel’s armed forces who were killed in action during the war of 1948.
