Mayor of Essen Calls for End of Desecration of Municipal Memorial to Jewish Victims

The Mayor of Essen today appealed to the people of his city to cooperate in assuring that the Star of David on a municipal memorial to the Jewish victims of Nazism is not desecrated again. The monument is being restored after three previous desecrations by “unknown” persons.

The Mayor also announced a program of education for the city’s youth, to make clear the “tragic fate” of the Jews under the Hitler regime. The city council also increased to 2,000 deutschemarks a reward for anybody apprehended defacing the monument.

The Student Council of Tuebingen University has issued a statement condemning anti-Semitic tendencies among certain student societies on the campus. The statement warns that several of these groups are taking over “pernicious” traditions of the Nazi era.
