The Mayor of Essen today appealed to the people of his city to cooperate in assuring that the Star of David on a municipal memorial to the Jewish victims of Nazism is not desecrated again. The monument is being restored after three previous desecrations by “unknown” persons.
The Mayor also announced a program of education for the city’s youth, to make clear the “tragic fate” of the Jews under the Hitler regime. The city council also increased to 2,000 deutschemarks a reward for anybody apprehended defacing the monument.
The Student Council of Tuebingen University has issued a statement condemning anti-Semitic tendencies among certain student societies on the campus. The statement warns that several of these groups are taking over “pernicious” traditions of the Nazi era.
