John Hersey, author of “The Wall”, a novel depicting Jewish life in the Warsaw ghetto under the Nazis and the revolt of the Jews against the German Army, was presented with the $1,000 Annisfield Wolf award, sponsored by the Saturday Review of Literature. The award is given for the best fiction focussing public interest upon the tragedy of racial intolerance.
Prof. Henry Pratt Fairchild, chairman of the award committee, declared that the narrative form chosen by Mr. Hersey “is not only original and refreshing, but also peculiarly well suited to portray emotions and episodes that characterized the heroic resistance of the Jews of Warsaw against the tyranny and barbarities of the Nazi Germans.” He added that “the volume deserve a place among the world’s greatest classics.”
