The United Nations Truce Supervisor in Palestine, Major General William E. Riley, today informed the United Nations that the Israelis had yesterday stopped all work on the Huleh drainage project in the demilitarized zone between Israel and Syria pending an investigation of the Israeli – Syrian dispute.
Gen. Riley’s report stressed that the investigation would lead to a resumption of work on Land not under dispute. The investigation would be bunched he said, by the chairman of the Israel-Syrian Mixed Armistice Commission, who would also interview Arab land owners removed from the project area.
Gen. Riley told the UN that the Israel Government had agreed to permit those land owners to return to their property who expressed a desire to do so. His brief message made it clear that his aim was to negotiate agreements between the Israelis and the Arab land owners concerned, and to get the Huleh project back into operation.
