Every opportunity is being taken to bring pressure upon the Egyptian Government to permit the transit of Israel-bound oil tankers through the Suez Canal, British Foreign Secretary Herbert Morrison told the House of Commons today.
Anthony Eden pointed out that Britain has been trying to persuade Egypt for two yeas to give up its blockade against Israel and that all efforts in this direction brought no results. “There are measures in our power which can be taken together with our allies,” he insisted. Mr. Morrison replied that he would be willing to consider any suggestions, including a suggestion by Mr. Eden that the oil tankers be sent to Haifa through the Suez Canal under effective escort.
British newspapers today carried articles urging stronger pressure from England on Egypt’s blockading of Israeli shipping in the Suez Canal. The Daily Graphic says that the United States has promised arms to Egypt, provided that Egypt reaches a political agreement with Britain.
