Security Council Session on Suez Blockade Postponed Until Next Week

The session of the United Nations Security Council on Israel’s complaint against Egypt’s blockade of the Suez Canal to Israel-bound shipping which was scheduled to be held today has been postponed until next Thursday. The delay was granted by Council president Warren Austin of the United States at the request of the delegations of Turkey, Brazil, Ecuador and Yugoslavia.

The principal reason for the frequent delays in bringing the Suez Canal dispute to a head in the Council have been the urgings for delay by Jefferson B. Caffery, U.S. Ambassador to Egypt, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency learned today. Although Ambassador Caffery, who asked the State Department to slow down Council action, has expressed the hope that he could persuade the Egyptians to take a more moderate attitude, informed sources at the U.N. express little confidence in his chances for success.
