The opinion that Israel will accept the invitation of the United Nations Palestine Conciliation Commission to attend a meeting in Paris together with the Arab states in a new attempt to make peace in the Middle East was expressed here today in diplomatic circles.
These same sources asserted that the Commission’s invitation was issued at the initiative of the State Department, which is said to have definite proposals to put to the parties through the Commission. It was indicated that the Commission would meet in Paris at the end of this month to prepare for the conference which it has called for September 10.
The invitation, extended this week-end by Ely Palmer, American chairman of the U.N. Commission, from Geneva where the group is meeting, was addressed to Israel, Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon. It expressed the hope that results could be achieved in time to report to the U.N. General Assembly which will begin meeting in Paris November 6. The Commission also stated that it will be prepared to exercise its mediatory functions by suggesting specific solutions to specific problems for consideration by the parties.”
