A resolution calling for the closing of the Jewish Agency executive branch in Now York was defeated here at the closing session today of the world Labor Zionist conference when a majority of the delegates decided that such a stop would be “premature.” Instead, a committee consisting of Zalman Shazar, Louis Segal and Baruch Zuckerman was appointed to outline in concrete terms a program for the Agency executive in America.
Mr. Segal, who agreed that the American office be liquidated, argued that the Jewish Agency, with its various departments, divests the local Zionist movement in America of some its functions. Only a Zionist movement with manifold functions can grow, Mr. Segal claimed.
The case for maintenance of the status quo in reference to the New York branch was presented by Berl Locker, Agency chairman in Jerusalem who was supported by Mr. Zuckerman. He argued that since Zionist groups in the U.S. are not yet ready to merge into a real federation the Agency executive must provide them with a coordinated leadership.
