The British Government does not intend to appease Egypt at the expense of Israel, the London Times said today. The paper emphasized that until Israel’s differences with the Arab countries are composed, the Jewish State will not be admitted into the new defense organization which is being planned for the Middle East by the Big Powers.

“Fear has been widely expressed in Israel that the four powers might be ready to go a long way to appease Egypt, but this view seems to be losing ground as the news from the Suez Canal zone grows more serious.” the Times editorial said.

Declaring that it is more and more felt in London that the Egyptian Government, whatever its real intentions are, may be overplaying its hand and may force the Big Powers to go ahead with their plans without paying any attention to Egyptian national susceptibilities, the Times asserted: “If this happens, many of Israel’s immediate anxieties would disappear even though she herself may not be invited to join the Middle East defense organization.”

The editorial emphasized that it is the hope of the Big Powers to bring both Israel and the Arab countries into the Middle Eastern defense project at a later stage. At present it is impossible to set up a defense organization in the Middle East which would include both sides in the Palestine dispute as long as the breach between them remains, the editorial stated.
