By-passing the Israeli delegation’s challenge to the Arab states’ good faith in the “peace” negotiations here, the United Nations Palestine Conciliation Commission today began discussing its five-point peace proposal with the representatives of Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon.
Meanwhile, observers believe that the rejection of the Commission’s peace plan two weeks ago by the Arab League was a “purely diplomatic maneuver.” After today’s session, a Commission spokesman said that the Arab delegations had been given a detailed explanation of the five-point plan, and had been told that the same explanation would be given the Israelis.
The Israelis will probably meet with Commission on Friday, at which time Maurice Fischer, head of the delegation, is expected to reiterate his view that the Arabs must pledge not to commit hostile acts against Israel before the Jewish state will discuss the overall peace plan.
