George C. McGhee, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, will be succeeded temporarily by Deputy Assistant Secretary Burton Berry should he be appointed as Ambassador to Turkey before the Congress re-convenes, it was announced here today by the State Department.

Asked if Henry G. Byroade, Director of the Department’s Division of German Affairs, was to take over Mr. McGhee’s job as Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs, a Department spokesman did not rule out this possibility, but did emphasize that no final decision has been taken. He said no decision will be made on a permanent successor until Congress is back in session.
