Attorney General J. Howard McGrath today assured Rep. Louis B. Heller, of New York, that “appropriate measures will be undertaken if it is found that any individual has been deprived of rights protected by the Constitution and Laws of the United States” in the recent series of anti-Semitic and anti-Negro bombing incidents in the Miami area.
McGrath said that the F.B.I. has been instructed to investigate so that the department can determine whether the Miami incidents involve violations of the Federal statutes and what, if any, action can be taken. The Attorney General said also that when he was in the Senate, he had sponsored a civil rights bill, which would punish any two or more people committing or attempting to commit violations against any person or his property because of race, color, religion, or national origin.
