Approximately 336,000 American visas have been granted to displaced persons under the DP Act which expired last night, it was reported today by John W. Gibson, chairman of the Displaced Persons Commission. About 300,000 recipients of these visas are already in the United States, the remainder are expected by March 15, he stated.
A spokesman said today that the Commission will continue functioning until August 1 under special legislation enacted by Congress to bring in 54, 744 Eastern European Germans and certain categories of displaced persons. It was made known that the DP Commission, in its screening process, uncovered about 4,000 cases involving approximately 8,000 people who could not meet security requirements.
