War Veterans Commander Calls for Fight Against Bigotry in U.S.

National Commander-in-Chief Frank C. Hilton of the Veterans of Foreign Wars today called on the Junior Chamber of Commerce to utilize all the Chamber’s influence and facilities to end what he termed “rampant violence and outrages against racial and religious groups by fanatics who should be in padded cells or behind bars.”

Speaking at a luncheon of the Tallahassee unit of the Chamber, Mr. Hilton urged the entire national organization of the Junior Chamber of Commerce to join with the V.F.W. in “taking up the cudgel against all forms of intolerance and bigotry, and the abuses of basic Americanism which these passions engender.” He cited the bomb murder of Harry T. Moore, Negro civic leader, and Mrs. Moore, and deplored as “wholly contrary to elementary principles of citizenship and American living” the previous and subsequent desecration of Jewish synagogues, Catholic churches, and Negro housing developments in Florida.
