Gov. Dewey today asked the Legislature to give the State Committee Against Discrimination power to investigate bias in restaurants and other public places. The SCAD’s jurisdiction is now limited to the field of employment.

“For many years,” Dewey said, “the state has recognized that access to public places is a civil right. I recommend expansion of the Commission’s jurisdiction to include access to restaurants and other public places.” In the field of unemployment discrimination, Dewey told the legislators that New York “continues to serve as the model to other states.”
