The Board of Deputies of British Jews today reaffirmed its support for direct negotiations with the German Government for the payment of reparations and restitution claims. The decision was adopted after a lengthy meeting marked by bitter disagreement and debate.
One of the speakers during the debate, Israel Cohen, deputy chairman of the Board’s foreign affairs committee, said that he thought it was “odd” that while preliminary negotiations had been in progress for months between Jewish Agency representatives and the Germans for restitution of identifiable property no protest had come from those elements within the Board who are now in opposition to direct negotiations.
