A Turkish Jew who was the largest single victim of the discriminatory “tax on capital” imposed in Turkey in 1942 has applied to the Turkish National Assembly for redress. This is the first time in Turkish Parliamentary history that a Jew has applied to Parliament to obtain his rights.
The applicant is Leon Tarantao who owned a large factory and who was taxed 2, 000, 000 Turkish pounds. He is presently trying to recover this tax. The Turkish press is generally very critical of his action.
