A report on Israel’s urgent needs was presented here today to the board of directors of the United Israel Appeal by its president Rudolf G. Sonneborn.
Mr. Sonneborn reported that Israel is emerging from “the most desperate winter season in its history” with at least 25 percent of the population ill-housed and the whole population “dangerously underfed” due to the drastic shortage of funds. He emphasized that U.I.A. constituent bodies had spent $27,720,000 this winter for the immigration and resettlement program, and said that more then $40,000,000 would be required for the next four months.
“The coming spring, as a time of planting and building, opens a new season of hope for the beleaguered people of Israel who are daily undergoing heroic sacrifices so that their program of life-saving and life-building can continue, ” Mr. Sonneborn said. “American Jews must help make this spring a time of re-birth by helping to provide the seed-capital, through the United Jewish Appeal, which can aid in the rescue of Israel from the despair and depression of this past winter.”
