Rep. Ray J. Madden of Indiana has asked and received consent of Congress to have stricken from the permanent record of Congress his words which expressed agreement with an anti-Semitic outburst by Rep. John Rankin. Rep. Madden had said that “the gentlemen is absolutely correct” after Rankin attacked Jews.
Rep. Madden explained that he “did not listen” to Rankin’s remarks as he was reading a letter while Rankin was talking. The Indiana Congressman told of his high regard for the Jewish people, described his support of Israel, and praised the record of American Jewry in the military service. “I need not mention to the members of this House that I do not in any way subscribe or endorse the import of a statement such as that made by Rep. Rankin,” he declared.
