Yeshiva University Breaks Its Tradition; Gives Degree to a Woman

Dr. Martha M. Eliot, chief of the United States Children’s Bureau, will be the first woman recipient of an honorary degree from Yeshiva University in its 55 years of existence, it was announced today. She will receive an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from the university on May 1st, the announcement said.

A woman was elected president of a Jewish Community Council for the first time in the United States when Mrs. Jack Lesnow was chosen president of the Rockville Center Jewish Community Council at its 5th annual meeting. The Council, which represents 13 Jewish organizations, is the oldest on Long Island. Mrs. Lesnow, a founder of the Council, was one of the three people who drafted its constitution.
