The Lawyers’ Club of Toronto has rescinded a by-law limiting membership to white and Christian males and voted overwhelmingly to permit any lawyer regardless of race, creed or color to become a member. This discriminatory by-law was retained for more than 30 years despite strong protests. The vote was about 3 to 1 in favor of admitting Negroes, Jews, Orientals and other races, but the ban on women lawyers remains. Under the old by-law, Jewish lawyers came under the ban of the 600-member organization, but the Jewish lawyers of the city simply went out and formed their own association and threw its doors open to all members of the profession.
