The Israel Embassy today expressed its government’s gratitude “for the cordial cooperation of the State Department and its Technical Cooperation Administration and of the Mutual Security Administration in expediting the completion of the payment of monies voted to Israel under the terms of the Mutual Security Act of 1951.”
The Embassy’s action followed a State Department announcement this week-end that it planned to release $11,583,000 in refugee relief funds remaining from the $50,000,000 allocated under the Mutual Security Act for the relief and rehabilitation of Jewish refugees in Israel, and another $8,000,000 in general economic assistance. Although the Department gave no explanation for its emergency action, it was reported here that it was taken in response to a plea for immediate help from the Jewish State.
U. S. Mutual Security aid is normally allocated after specific projects have been approved. However, Israel will use the $11,583,000 to pay bills resulting from the resettlement of refugees rather than to finance specific rehabilitation projects. The $8,000,000 will go for the purchase of commodities “essential to the economy” of the Jewish State.
(In Tel Aviv today. U.S. Ambassador Monnett B. Davis and Bruce McDaniel, American technical aid director in Israel, called on Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett to open negotiations for the allocation of the nearly $20,000,000 which the State Department announced it will release to Israel shortly.)
