A delegation of Israeli newspaper editors today called on Minister of the Interior Moshe Shapira to protest a proposed amendment to the laws governing the press which the editors claim will actually worsen the position of the press.
The amendment would give the government extended powers to suppress any newspaper by a simple order of the authorities for “causing panic, spreading rumors” and similar charges which in the opinion of the government officials “may harm the state.” After conferring with the editors, the Minister pledged that the Cabinet would reconsider the amendment before submitting it to Parliament.
