The Union of Italian Jewish Communities has protested to the Italian Ministry of Industry against a Saudi Arabian request that all goods exported from Italy to Saudi Arabia be accompanied by a declaration from the Italian Chamber of Commerce stating that the merchandise was manufactured by non-Jewish firms.

The Union pointed out that such a declaration would be in violation of the Italian Constitution, which forbids any mention of race in official documents. A Saudi Arabian legation spokesman said that similar declarations are required from all countries having trade relations with Saudi Arabia. He added that there were many Jews living in the Middle East and holding Italian citizenship who had never been to Italy.
