18 Jewish Athletes on U.S. Team Competing in World Olympiad

Eighteen Jewish athletes from the United States, four of them members of the J.W.B. affiliated Jewish Community Centers and YM-YWHA’s, are members of the U.S. Olympic team which is ready to compete against the athletic elite of the world in the 15th Olympiad, opening this week in the Helsinki Stadium, it was announced here today by the National Jewish Welfare Board.

Shepherded by Charles L. Ornstein, J.W.B. representative on the U.S. Olympic Committee, who is responsible for housing and feeding the American team, the Jewish athletes wearing Uncle Sam’s colors, who are entered in eight events, constitute the largest Jewish contingent on any American Olympic team. In the 1948 Olympiad at London there were 15 Jews on the American team, competing in 10 events.
