Reports that the Egyptian Army wishes to avenge its defeat by the Israel Army and insists on a “second round” against Israel were denied by Gen. Mohammed Naguib, Egypt’s military dictator.
A report to this effect is carried in the press here today from Cairo. The report says that Gen. Naguib appealed to the British Government to lift its arms embargo against Egypt and to equip the Egyptian Army with weapons. “Britain and the U.S. could do more to assist the new Egypt” Gen. Neguib is quoted as having stated.
(In Washington, a State Department spokesman said yesterday that the question of whether Egypt receives American munitions depends on whether or not she joins a Western-oriented Middle Eastern command. The U. S. Government has some time ago agreed to sell Egypt arms for Egyptian police forces on a cash-and-carry basis, he said, adding that the was unaware of any new Egyptian request for addition al arms.)
