State Dept. Optimistic on Egypt’s Joining of Middle East Command

State Department sources today indicated optimism on the Middle Eastern situation for the first time in several months. There were high hopes that Egypt might join a Middle East Defense Command, they said.

A report from Cairo received here today stated that Prime Minister Aly Maher told Egyptian army officers here that the United States has promised Egypt considerable Point Four aid to industrialize the country and reclaim the desert. The report quoted him as saying that an agreement to this effect was reached in a series of conferences with American Ambassador Jefferson Caffery.
