A call to the people of the United States to support Israel was voiced by General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Republican Presidential candidate, in a message last night to a dinner in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel arranged by the Greater New York Committee for State of Israel Bonds. Senator Irving M. Ives of New York was the guest of honor at the dinner.
“The State of Israel,” General Eisenhower said in his message which was sent from Houston, Texas, “is democracy’s outpost in the Middle East, and every American who loves liberty must join the effort to make secure forever the future of this newest member in the family of nations. We pray that a strong Israel and her Arab neighbors will join in the creation of a just and lasting peace which will bring to all an era of prosperity and enlightenment.”
Senator Ives received a plaque for his advocacy in the Senate of Israel’s cause. The plaque, presented by Henry Montor, is an outline map of Israel in silver. Addressing the 300 guests at the dinner, the New York Senator said that the founding of Israel and its growth had proved that democracy is a dynamic force in our time. Other speakers included James G. McDonald, first U.S. Ambassador to Israel, and Roger W. Straus.
