A statement condemning the introduction of a religious issue by a Jewish group into the local elections campaign was issued here by Superior Judge Albert C. Wollenberg, chairman of the Jewish Community Relations Council.
The statement pointed out that the committee had recently taken action when charges of anti-Semitism were made against a candidate for national office. The council had not taken sides, the statement said, “but resented the injection of a religious issue in a political campaign.”
The statement said a group of Jewish voters had organized a so-called “Jewish Citizens Council” to elect a candidate for judicial office and asserted: “The Jewish Community Relations Council resents and repudiates this attempt to inject a religious complexion into a local political contest, believing, as it always has, that religious affiliation should play no part in any political matter.” It accused organizers of the citizens group of rendering “a distinct disservice to San Francisco Jewry and to their community.”
