The Australian Government’s approach to the solution of the Palestine problem in 1947 was motivated by justice rather than political expediency, Dr. Herbert V. Evatt, former Minister for External Affairs, told a meeting here last night.

Speaking at the meeting sponsored by the B’nai B’rith to mark the 35th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration, Dr. Evatt, who played an important role in gaining support for the adoption of the original U.N. Palestine partition resolution, said that he believed that U.N. conciliation in the Palestine case had succeeded. He also said that Israel was a democracy under the leadership of labor leader Premier David Ben Gurion, and that under its first President, Dr. Weizmann, the Jewish State was a factor for peace and justice in the Middle East.
