Israel cast its vote with the majority in favor of a United Nations investigation of the racial situation in South Africa as the U.N. Special Political Committee ended its consideration of the “apartheid” laws of South Africa. A roll call vote on the 18-power resolution on the inquiry was 35 in favor, two against, with 22 abstentions. Israel voted “yes” for all operative paragraphs of the resolution.
However, an Israeli amendment to have the commission report its conclusions to the Secretary General for transmission to member states was snowed under, with only two votes in favor,33 against, and 23 abstentions. The 18-power resolution instructs the commission to report its conclusions to the 8th session of the General Assembly.
