Congregation B’nai Israel of this city has donated more than II acres of a 19-acre plot it bought here to a Catholic institution in an action hailed by Toledo’s Mayor Lloyd E. Roulet as “a landmark in the advancement of religious and racial tolerance and understanding.” The Congregation, which will build a new synagogue, school and library on the six acres it is keeping, has also given the city one acre for the enlargement of an adjoining public playground.
The 11.7 acres was donated to the Ursuline Community of Roman Catholic nuns which will build a school on it. Two years ago the congregation, the Ursuline nuns and the city were competing for the tract, but an amicable settlement was reached for dividing the land. To express appreciation of the “fine spirit of amity” which made possible the compromise on the tract, the trustees of B’nai Israel voted unanimously to purchase the entire tract and give away the portions assigned to the other two parties, rather than share the cost. The parties have agreed to build no fences separating the three sections.
